Sarfaraz expresses grief over Sharjeel’s absence in WI series

Pakistan One-Day International and Twety20 captain Sarfaraz Ahmed expressed disappointment over losing opener Sharjeel Khan and his absence in the upcoming tour of Team Pakistan to West Indies.

He talked to media on Friday at the end of team’s training camp at Lahore’s National Cricket Academy. “It’s saddening when you lose some players who are perfect for the startup. Sharjeel was the type of player we needed as he was perfect for the contemporary run-and-gun style of cricket.”

He declared losing a player of Sharjeel’s quality a “bitter blow” but showed confidence in his team to overcome the loss. “The West Indies tour holds immense importance for the team. Sharjeel’s absence will make a difference, but hopefully the other openers will step up and not let us feel his absence.”

“The presence of senior players like Mohamamd Hafeez and Shoaib Malik is very important for the team,” remarked Sarfaraz.

The skipper insisted that Umar Akmal was dropped from the team due to fitness issues and not because of alleged expulsion.

He also shed light on Azhar Ali’s future in the team by explaining that the decision to drop him from the squad has not ended his career.
