The soldier who saved Lahore
The soldier who saved Lahore: Any discussion regarding the 1965 war is incomplete without mentioning the exceptional role and valour of Major Raja Aziz Bhatti Shaheed.
Bhatti was born in Hong Kong in 1928 and graduated from there. In 1950, he got commission in Punjab Regiment of the Pakistan Army.
In recognition of his performance as a cadet, he was awarded with ‘Sword of Honour’ and a gold medal.
Being the company commander, Major Aziz Bhatti valiantly defended BRB Canal against the enemy in Lahore’s Burki area in the 1965 war. Bhatti kept the Indian troops from advancing by valiantly fighting along with his forward platoon for five days, braving the Indian artillery and tanks.
When the enemy had been waging attacks from its artillery and armoured tanks, the valiant officer along with his soldiers continued to fight and hold their positions.
In order to keep a watch on movement of enemy troops, he chose to set up a post on a relatively higher ground in the vicinity. He embraced martyrdom after being hit by an enemy tank shell on September 12.
In recognition of his valour and courage, Major Aziz Bhatti was awarded with the country’s highest military award ‘Nishan-e-Haider’.
His son, Major (retd) Zafar Bhatti, while recalling the bravery of his father, says that though he lost his father, his sacrifice saved Lahore.
“The enemy had mounted a full-fledged attack. An entire brigade of Indian army wanted to reach Shalimar cutting its way through the GT Road.”
“He (Maj. Aziz Bhatti) kept the Indian troops from advancing from September 6 to 11, dropped shells and forced them to retreat,” his son recalls, adding that “this saved Lahore”.
People pay glowing tributes to Major Aziz Bhatti for his valour and visit his grave near Burki to the day.
