US teen died after drinking caffeine too quickly, coroner says

US teen died after drinking caffeine too quickly, coroner says: Coroner has ruled that a healthy teenager in North Carolina had died as a result of caffeine over dosage. The coroner has ruled that it was the amount of caffeine he consumed in a span of couple of hours that resulted in his death. The teenager Davis Allen Cripe collapsed at high school in April. He had consumed a McDonald’s latte, a large Mountain Dew soft drink and an energy drink within the span of under two hours, Gary Watts said. The 16 year old had died from a caffeine induced cardiac event causing a probable arrhythmia. The teenager had no pre-existing heart diseases. The weight of the teenager was 90kg (200 lbs) the teenager could not be considered morbidly obese.

The report says that “We’re not saying that it was the total amount of caffeine in the system, it was just the way that it was ingested over that short period of time, and the chugging of the energy drink at the end was what the issue was with the cardiac arrhythmia.” The Richland Country coroner had said that caffeine would not have been seen as a factor in teenager’s death if the witnesses had not been able to tell what the teenager had been drinking. The witnesses have not been able to tell which brand of energy drink the teenager had consumed.

The investigators have said that we are not speaking out against caffeine, we are just saying that people should concentrate on which way and how fast are they consuming the caffeine, just like they do with cigarettes and alcohol. The American Academy of Paerdiatric (AAP) has warned against children and teenagers consuming energy drinks saying that their ingredients have not been tested on children. No one can say that they are safe.

The report says that the side effects of caffeine include irregular heartbeats and abrupt blood pressure changes. Most energy drinks contain a caffeine equivalent of three cups of coffee and as much as 14 teaspoons of sugar, the AAP says.
